Effect ofMoringa oleiferaLam. Seed Extract on Toluene Diisocyanate-Induced Immune-Mediated Inflammatory Responses in Rats

Abstract: Moringa oleifera Lam. is a small tree cultivated throughout India. We have investigated the effect of ethanolic extract of seeds of Moringa oleifera (MOEE, an herbal remedy) on the potential prevention of immune-mediated inflammatory responses in toluene diisocyanate (TDI as antigen)-induced asthma in Wistar rats. Rats were divided into five different groups (n = 8/group): Group-I = unsensitized control; Group-II = TDI control/vehicle; Group-III = dexamethasone (DXM) 2.5 mg/kg; and, Groups IV and V = 100 mg/kg… Show more

“…Other studies have reported the ability of Moringa seed extract to attenuate the chronic immune-mediated inflammatory responses typical of certain diseases such as asthma [66] and rheumatoid arthritis [67]. Treatment with ethanolic extract of Moringa seeds has, indeed, been found to alleviate broncho-alveolar inflammation by decreasing the infiltration of inflammatory cells into the lungs and reducing the secretion of inflammatory mediators into the airways of asthma-induced rats [66].…”

“…Treatment with ethanolic extract of Moringa seeds has, indeed, been found to alleviate broncho-alveolar inflammation by decreasing the infiltration of inflammatory cells into the lungs and reducing the secretion of inflammatory mediators into the airways of asthma-induced rats [66]. Similarly, treatment with the ethanolic extract of M. oleifera seeds was found to reduce the paw oedema volume, the serum levels of inflammatory mediators and to protect against lymphocytic infiltration, bone destruction and cartilage erosion in the synovial joint, subsequent to the development of arthritis in rats [67].…”

“…Ayurvedic practitioners have administered the seed extract nasally in diseases like rhinitis and successfully used the dried seeds as an 'anti-allergic' agent (Chopra et al, 1938). In addition, we have reported an antiarthritic activity of ethanolic extract of seeds of Moringa oleifera against chemical-induced rheumatoid arthritis (Mahajan et al, 2007a) as well as an antiasthmatic activity against immune-mediated inflammatory responses in rat (Mahajan et al, 2007b). However, no systematic study to date has examined the immunomodulatory properties of the extract of Moringa oleifera seeds.…”

“…**P < 0·01 versus control. induced OA is not currently understood completely, oxidative stress is likely to be a major candidate for explaining the pathogenesis of diisocyanate-induced OA [25,26]. A previous report demonstrated that TDI exposure induces ROS generation [19].…”
