Effect of image quality fluctuations on the repeatability of thickness measurements in swept-source optical coherence tomography

Abstract: This study investigated the effect of image quality fluctuations on the repeatability of thickness measurements of the peripapillary retinal nerve fibre (PP-RNFL) and ganglion cell-inner plexiform (GC-IPL) layers using swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT). Three consecutive OCT scans each were performed on 56 healthy subject. Finally, 168 SS-OCT results were analysed. Based on the tertile values of the mean absolute difference of image quality score, all subjects were divided into the following t… Show more

“…One study by Lee et al ( 16 ) reported similar repeatability of GCIPL thickness measurement between SS-OCT (DRI-OCT, Topcon) and SD-OCT (Cirrus HD-OCT, Carl Zeiss Meditec) in healthy eyes ( 16 ). Image quality has a positive correlation with OCT-based measurements and is an essential factor affecting measurement reliability ( 19–23 ). In Lee’s study ( 16 ), the Cirrus HD-OCT and DRI-OCT devices had similar rates of poor-quality scans.…”

“…It has already been described that as there is a greater fluctuation in the quality of the OCT images, a relevant reduction in the repeatability of the images can be observed. 19 …”

“…Thus, reactive and infiltrating glial cells in pathological conditions may impact measurements of RNFL thickness, complicating interpretation. Unfortunately, the use of different imaging instrumentation and proprietary software have made it difficult to make direct comparisons among studies [ 106 , 107 ]. In addition, studies in rodents suggest a potential mismatch between RGC loss and RNFL thinning, further complicating interpretation [ 104 , 108 ].…”
