Effect of Incorporation of Hairy Vetch on Nitrous Oxide Emission from Soils Cultivated with Maize

Abstract: BACKGROUND: Impact of incorporating hairy vetch into soil on mitigating nitrous oxide (N 2 O) emissions from maize field in South Korea has not been investigated, whereas impacts on soil properties and nutrients for crops have been investigated. Therefore, this study was conducted to examine N 2 O emission from upland soil incorporated with hairy vetch for one year in maize field. METHODS AND RESULTS: Hairy vetch was grown in an upland soil from November, 2017 to May, 2018 and incorporated into soil on May 25 … Show more

“…Since MC was the system in which the greatest quantities of mineral fertilizer were applied, this was the system with the highest cumulative N 2 O emissions. Corresponding results have been obtained in similar studies in which partially or totally substituting mineral fertilization with the incorporation of legume residues resulted in decreases of around 10-20 % in cumulative soil N 2 O emissions without affecting the main crop yield (Guardia et al, 2016a;Han et al, 2019). The effects of the legumes on cumulative soil N 2 O emissions were similar in all three years, therefore the type of legume crop and its use were not driving factors for the differences between the cropping systems.…”
