Effect of Individual and Selected Combined Treatments With Saline Solutions and Spent Engine Oil on the Processing Attributes and Functional Quality of Tomato (Solanum lycopersicon L.) Fruit: In Memory of Professor Leila Ben Jaballah Radhouane (1958–2021)

Abstract: The results showed that soil electrical conductivity, (EC2: 7 dS/m) increased soluble solids, lycopene content, total phenolic content, hydrophilic and lipophilic radical scavenging activities (HRSA and LRSA) by 14.2, 149, 20, 46.4, and 19.0%, respectively, compared with control. Under 0.5% spent engine oil (SEO), flavonoid content decreased by 21.7% compared with the control. HRSA and LRSA of fruits subjected to EC2/SEO1 treatment were, respectively, 45.9 and 35.5% lower than control. The a*/b* ratio was posi… Show more

“…The radical scavenging activity was assessed by the TEAC assay, one of the most recommended methods for measuring both HRSA and LRSA of fruits and vegetables [49]. The results obtained for the two fractions, lipophilic and hydrophilic, and consequently for their sum (TRSA) were higher in ripe fruits of the new tomato germplasm line OSTGL than those of the 'Rio Grande' variety.…”

“…In a study by Ilahy et al (2022), SEO reduced the count and quality of leaf and fruit per plant. The research of Ilahy et al, (2022) also recorded an increase in lycopene and β-carotene concentration, which are non-enzymatic antioxidant biomarkers indicating an increased oxidative stress due to SEO contamination in soil. The presence of different types of automobiles and machinery has called for an increase in the use of engine oil whose waste are most times disposed to surroundings like open fields and water ways thus contaminating our natural environment with hydrocarbon (Abioye et al, 2012).…”

“…This is so because the side effects of such plants to human health are innumerable. Many compounds, including highly needed synthetic agrochemicals like pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers can cause cellular damage through metabolic activation of plants physiology to highly reactive compounds such as free radicals that start a long cascade of oxidative stress that may finally damage the plants in such soils (Ilahy et al, 2022). There is even likelihood of exponentially dreadful effects on the final consumers of such plants i.e.…”
