Effect of Infectious Bursal Agent on the Response of Chickens to Newcastle Disease and Marek's Disease Vaccination

Abstract: White Leghorn chickens raised from one day old in an environment contaminated by the infectious bursal agent (IBA) had lower geometric mean titers (GMT) as measured by the hemagglutination-inhibition (HI) test to the Newcastle disease virus (NDV), than control Leghorns reared in an uncontaminated environment. Immunosuppression, defined as a reduction in GMT, was most pronounced at 35-56 days old for Leghorns vaccinated with NDV at 1 and 28 days or at 28 days. In a separate trial with broilers, immunosuppressio… Show more

“…The dramatic reduction in IgA synthesis by IBDV may provide an explanation as to why prior exposure to IBDV renders birds more susceptible to several common respiratory (Giambrone et al, 1976) and enteric (Wyeth, 1975) pathogens. Since IgA is primarily responsible for production of local immunity, a reduction in synthesis of IgA could increase the susceptibility of chicks to local infection.…”

“…However, in one of his trials, the latent period of MD defined as an absence of clinico-pathological manifestations, was much longer in the IBDV-infected group. Giambrone et al (1976) noted markedly enhanced incidence of MD in chickens exposed to an environment contaminated with IBDV. On the other hand, Sharma (1984) showed that pathogenic IBDV reduced the gross MD lesion response.…”
