Effect of injury on shivering thermogenesis in the rat

Abstract: SUMMARY1. Shivering in response to changes in ambient or core temperature has been measured in control rats and rats injured by bilateral hind-limb ischaemia, both with and without fur.2. Removal of the fur increased the threshold ambient temperature for the onset of shivering.3. This threshold was lower than in uninjured controls during the latter half of a 4 hr period of bilateral hind-limb ischaemia in rats with or without fur.4. The threshold was also lower than in uninjured controls after the period of bi… Show more

“…increase in T, (Fig. 2) during the reduction of Ta from 30 to 50 C was 0-92 + 0.180 C (n = 13) which was significantly less (P < 0.01) than the corresponding value of 1-81 + 0.170 C (n = 9) in 20°C acclimated rats studied earlier (Stoner, 1971 Fig. 2.…”

“…When Ta fell below this zone non-shivering thermogenesis increased progressively and 666 NON-SHI VERING THERMOGENESIS in the 30 C acclimated rat was continuously variable over the Ta range studied. Unlike shivering (Stoner, 1971) there was no gap between the lower end of the thermoneutral zone and the onset of heat production by brown adipose tissue.…”
