Effect of inoculation with a microbial consortium that degrades organic acids on the composting efficiency of food waste

Abstract: SummaryIn order to overcome the excessive acidification problem, a microbial consortium for the degradation of organic acids (MCDOA), which acts synergistically in degrading organic acids, was developed and used as an inoculum to improve the efficiency of food waste composting. MCDOA could eliminate the initial lag phase of the pile temperature rise because of excessive acidification and effectively shorten the composting period. Fluorescence regional integration analysis of the excitation‐emission matrix spec… Show more

“…The decrease in the total phenol content at 170 • C could be explained by the thermosensitive character of some bioactive compounds in the strawberry, which are usually degraded at high temperatures [18,19]. At 220 • C, although some thermosensitive compounds would be also degraded, the steam-explosion pre-treatment is able to alter the cellulose and, even, partially the lignin [26], releasing phenolic compounds that were not available after less severe hydrothermal treatments [27,28].…”

“…One of the important characteristics of waste composting is a decrease in pH in the premature stages of composting [77], because poultry excreta contain abundant and easily decomposable sugary substances, fatty materials, and grease. Degradation of these materials produces a large amount of intermediate acidic by-products, organic acids, which leads to the reduced pH of the composting substrate at the initial stage of waste composting [78], low pH values could lead to the slow down the rate of decomposition of organic matter, and thereby lower the efficiency of composting due to reduce the activity of microbes. pH of initial stage composts are slightly alkaline in this study (Fig.…”
