Microplastics (<5 mm) can have negative and deleterious environmental effects. However, the scarce information on the levels of microplastics and the factors underlying their input in wetlands, limits the understating of the vulnerability of these ecosystems to microplastics. To contribute closing this important information gap, the concentration (items/m−2), size and the variables related to the distribution of microplastics in fluvial sediments of the Cuiabá River, a tributary of the Pantanal, the world largest flooded Savanna and a UNESCO World Heritage were investigated. The mean microplastic level was 576.8 ± 577.8 items/m−2 of sediments which were mainly fragments (309.0 ± 319.6 items/m−2) and fibers (267.8 ± 339.9 items/m−2). The maximum level was 1938.8 items/m−2 found in the urban stretch of the sister cities of Cuiabá and Várzea Grande, the largest urban agglomeration in the study area. Unexpectedly, the composition of the microplastic with highest average level (240.7 ± 310.4 items/m−2), a blue synthetic fiber, could not be unequivocally determined by RAMAN spectrometry. Its complex composition includes Pb, Li and Nb, suggesting it may derive from electronic waste. Polypropylene (159.2 ± 133.4 items/m−2) and Polyvinyl Chloride (104.6 ± 217.2 items/m−2) were the second and third polymers with higher average levels. The average size of microplastics particles in sampling sites ranged from 0.18 mm to 1.74 mm. Microplastic concentration was positively related to urban areas. Similarly, microplastics particles size decreased with distance from urban areas. These results suggest that urban areas along the Cuiabá River, with poor waste management, are a major source of microplastic pollution in the Pantanal floodplain and that electronic waste might contribute significantly to this contamination. This study highlights the importance of adequate waste management in cities to limit microplastic contamination in areas of ecological importance, such as the Pantanal.

The proximity of freshwater ecosystems to anthropogenic activities makes them one of the most threatened environments by plastic pollution in the form of microplastics (MPs). Therefore, it is crucial to identify the primary drivers of MP dynamics in rivers to enhance their management. This work analyzed the concentration of MPs in water and sediments and evaluated the influence of land use and its relationship with the main biotic indices employed to assess the water quality of rivers. This research was carried out in four different catchments, with three sampling points established in each river basin. The results revealed that MPs were ubiquitous across all locations, with concentrations ranging from 0.10 to 35.22 items m−3 in waters and from 26 to 643 items Kg−1 in sediments. The highest concentration of MPs both in water and sediments were found in the Lagares River (35.22 items m−3 and 643 items Kg−1), while the lowest concentrations were found in the Miñor River for water (0.10 items m−3) and Tea River for sediments (138 items Kg−1). Urbanization degree was identified as the primary driver of MP pollution in water, whereas population density correlated with sediment pollution levels. These findings explain the elevated MPs abundance in the more urbanized and populated Gafos and Lagares rivers compared to the relatively pristine Miñor and Tea rivers. Furthermore, the presence of MPs in sediments was found to negatively impact the most sensitive benthic macroinvertebrate taxa, as evidenced by lower values of the IASPT and EPT indices at sampling points with higher sediment MPs concentrations (Gafos and Lagares).

Indonesia merupakan negara agraris dengan total luas daratan sebesar 1,81 juta km2 yang mencakup 1,2% dari luas daratan di dunia. Hal tersebut tentunya juga membuka peluang akan adanya permasalahan pertanahan yang dapat mengganggu stabilitas kondisi sosial serta ekonomi di Indonesia. Salah satu permasalahan pertanahan yang kerap kita jumpai yaitu adanya ketidakpastian mengenai kepemilikan tanah yang kemudian hal tersebut dapat menimbulkan ketidakadilan dan kerugian bagi pihak-pihak yang terlibat di dalamnya. Sehingga hal tersebut menjadi dorongan bagi penulis untuk mengeksplorasi lebih lanjut terkait peran krusial kantor pertanahan dalam menangani sengketa batas tanah sebagai elemen penting dalam sistem administrasi pertanahan. Tujuan penelitian ini untuk memberikan wawasan yang lebih dalam tentang bagaimana peran kantor pertanahan dapat diperkuat untuk meningkatkan efektivitas mereka dalam mengatasi sengketa batas tanah yang kompleks. Metode penelitian ini bersifat deskriptif yang bertujuan untuk mengumpulkan informasi spesifik tentang individu, situasi, atau gejala lainnya. Jenis penelitian ini berupa hukum normatif empiris, serta jenis data yang digunakan yaitu data primer dan data sekunder. Teknik analisis data pada penelitian ini dengan menggunakan teknik analisa kualitatif. Hasil dari penelitian ini adalah Peran Kantor Pertanahan dalam menyelesaikan sengketa batas tanah melibatkan berbagai mekanisme, seperti badan peradilan, arbitrase, dan alternatif penyelesaian sengketa, termasuk mediasi, sementara pendaftaran tanah di ATR/BPN merupakan langkah krusial dalam menjamin kepastian hukum atas kepemilikan tanah dan mencegah konflik terkait pertanahan.
