Effect of Laser Resurfacing on p53 Expression in Photoaged Facial Skin

Abstract: The decrease in epidermal p53 expression after CO(2) and Er:YAG lasers may account for some of the benefits of resurfacing on the epidermis, as well as prevention of actinic neoplasia by adjusting any disturbance in the proliferation/apoptosis balance observed in photoaged facial skin.

“…The goal of laser treatment is induction of a proliferative phase of tissue repair. Programmed cell death or apoptosis is an important cellular process that may play a critical role in maintaining proliferative homeostasis within the skin [35]. The finding of increased p53 is consistent with induction of a proliferation by the laser as shown by the histopathologic observations.…”

“…Chronically sun-exposed skin in geriatric patients has been shown to have actinically damaged keratinocytes, which can be identified by overexpression of the p53 protein [El-Domyati et al, 2007]. To determine the effect of FLR treatment on these damaged keratinocytes, matched pairs of control and FLR-treated geriatric skin biopsies were analyzed for p53 expression (example shown in Fig.…”

“…Two to 3 passes of short pulsed ablative Er:YAG laser were applied to ablate the epidermis (points of bleeding) at the forehead and the crow's feet areas with pulse width of 350 microseconds and spot size of 5 mm at a fluence of 3 to 5 J/cm 2 per pass. 4,8,9 Meanwhile, an additional 1 to 2 passes were only performed over the rhytides until they were effaced.…”
