Effect of length of treatment on weight loss.

Abstract: Tests the efficacy of social problem-solving therapy for unipolar depression and examines the relative contribution of training in the problem-orientation component of the overall model. This process involves various beliefs, assumptions, appraisals, and expectations concerning life's problems and one's problem-solving ability. It is conceptually distinct from the remaining four problem-solving components that are specific goal-directed tasks. A dismantling research design, involving 39 depressed Ss, provides … Show more

“…These positive findings may be reflective of the large initial weight losses (16 kg) and the length of treatment, which on average consisted of weekly meetings for 1 year with the majority of that time being focused specifically on weight maintenance. It is well established that longer treatments lead to better long-term results, 26,27 particularly if maintenance treatment involves frequent self-monitoring and positive reinforcement 23 or effective problem-solving therapy. 28 Our results suggest that an extended weight loss maintenance treatment may be effective for not only decreasing weight regain during treatment, but also within the 1-2 years after contact with the treatment program ends.…”
