Effect of lens opacity on the glaucomatous field of vision

Abstract: Taking these changes into account, the indices gave a good prediction of the glaucomatous field status following cataract operation, which itself results in some increase in the underlying field defect.

“…[16][17][18] However, in glaucoma patients examined with standard perimetry a worsening of PSD was observed after cataract extraction (table 3). [9][10][11][12][13] However, to our knowledge, there are no reports on the effect of cataract on FDT in patients with glaucoma. As it has been shown that FDT perimetry is resistant to refractive blur, 19 researchers have thought that it may also be resistant to the effects of cataract to some extent.…”

“…Previous studies have shown the effect of cataract on standard white on white perimetry in patients with glaucomatous VF loss. [8][9][10][11][12][13] Similarly, cataract has been shown to affect short wavelength automated perimetry (SWAP). 14 Recent work has demonstrated the effect of cataract on FDT perimetry in normal subjects.…”

“…19,20 In glaucoma patients, however, a worsening of PSD was observed after cataract extraction (Table 3). [13][14][15][16][17] SITA technique is becoming increasingly popular with clinicians for its reduced testing time and similar performance to full-threshold, [3][4][5][6][7][8][9] making it a more patient-friendly test. The difference between this study and previously reported investigations using full-threshold could be attributed to SITA.…”

“…11,12 Other studies, however, have shown changes in PSD after the cataract extraction on full-threshold white-on-white perimetry in patients with glaucomatous VF loss. [13][14][15][16][17] Recently the AGIS study 18 reported changes in global indices of standard threshold perimetry after cataract extraction. As expected, overall, MD improved after cataract extraction, but PSD, an index that is supposed to be resilient to factors such as cataract, also showed deterioration.…”

“…Some of these complications would be expected to produce a diffuse reduction in retinal sensitivity26 27 and therefore a more diffuse type of progression than that caused by glaucoma. It might be possible to distinguish between diffuse and focal progression in these patients by determining the pattern of this progression 28…”
