Effect of Liposomal Doxorubicin in Pressurized Intra-Peritoneal Aerosol Chemotherapy (PIPAC)

Abstract: Background: This ex-vivo study was performed to compare the impact of doxorubicin vs. liposomal doxorubicin on penetration depth in peritoneal tissue during Pressurized Intra-Peritoneal Aerosol Chemotherapy (PIPAC) via microcatheter (MC).Methods: Fresh post mortem swine peritoneum was cut into proportional sections. One group of samples was treated with PIPAC with Doxorubicin (D), and the other was treated with PIPAC with liposomal doxorubicin (LD). Tissue specimens were placed as follows: at the bottom of the… Show more

“…This has been a significant problem in the application of these particles. For example, intraperitoneal application of more complex particles such as liposomal doxorubicin showed limited interaction with the surface and partial resorption [ 4 , 14 ]. The application of HIUS might, therefore, be a way to improve particle distribution and absorption in the peritoneal cavity.…”

“…The first problem is that micro- and nanoparticles do not easily penetrate the peritoneal surface [ 4 ]. Fluid chemotherapy does penetrate the peritoneum by molecular movement according to Fick's law of diffusion.…”

“…In addition, studies have investigated the use of different substances (12) and new drugs (13) for PIPAC applications. However, since intraperitoneal aerosol chemotherapy is predominantly used by surgeons and gynecologists in cases of peritoneal metastasis, its potential for the treatment of PM and MPE has been of less research interest.…”
