Effect of liquid plasticizers on crystallization of PCL in soft PVC/PCL/plasticizer blends

Abstract: In this work, poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PCL) and liquid plasticizer were combined used to plasticize poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC), and the possibility of using PVC/PCL/plasticizer blends to fabricate soft PVC with enhanced migration resistance was investigated. Through partial replacement of liquid plasticizers in soft PVC by equal quantity of PCL, flexibility was maintained while extraction loss of plasticizer by organic solvent was reduced significantly. Furthermore, crystallization of PCL in PVC/PCL/plasticizer b… Show more

“…Additives can promote crystallization or act as plasticizers such as dinonyl phthalate (DNP) and dioctyl adipate (DOA). However, in most cases the orientation of the crystal is not controlled. To tune orientation of the self-assembled mesostructures of block copolymers, as well as microcrystallite orientation when polymer blocks crystallize, most methodologies require the use of nanoscale inorganic templates. , Strongly segregated BCPs have also been developed as organic nanotemplates to direct the orientation of block copolymer crystallization .…”

“…CAPs derivatives are widely used as eco‐friendly plasticizers in various applications including biodegradable polymers food additives 50 . For food contact films various types of commercial CAPs such as TEC, TBC, ATEC, and ATBC were used for compostable polymers including PLA, 62,66–75 PHAs, 31,68,76–81 cellulose acetate, 82–84 PCL, 85 PBS, 66 and starch 86–88 …”

“…13 Furthermore, when PCL is used as plasticizer over long-term uses, its crystallization might result in dramatic deterioration of the transparency and flexibility of the polymer matrix, reducing its efficiency. 14 Another important feature on which the crystallinity of PCL has a huge impact is the degradability of the polymer. Crystallization reduces water uptake and retards degradation.…”
