Effect of locally delivered tetracycline hydrochloride as an adjunct to scaling and root planing on Hba1c, C-reactive protein, and lipid profile in type 2 diabetes: A clinico-biochemical study

Abstract: Aim:The aim was to assess the levels of HbA1c, C-reactive protein, and lipid profile in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus by treating the pockets using collagen impregnated sustained release resorbable tetracycline fiber (periodontal plus AB fiber) following scaling and root planing (SRP).Materials and Methods:A total of 40 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus were randomly distributed into two groups receiving either SRP and tetracycline fiber or SRP alone. Patients were evaluated clinically with gingi… Show more

“…She found that those with diabetes showed improved metabolic control (i.e., lower A1C levels) 3 and 6 months after periodontal treatment. In another study, Dodwad et al ( 34 ) observed significant reductions in A1C and C-reactive protein in a group receiving tetracycline plus SRP compared to a group receiving SRP alone. A study by Telgi et al ( 35 ) concluded that nonsurgical periodontal therapy can effectively decrease A1C in people with type 2 diabetes who are on medication.…”

“…C-reactive protein, HbA1c, and lipid profile were the biochemical variables assessed at baseline and one and three months. There was a significant improvement in all clinical parameters, and the HbA1c levels in the tetracycline group asserted its beneficial effects over SRP only [ 13 ].…”
