Effect of Long-Term Aspirin Use on Embolic Events in Infective Endocarditis

Abstract: In patients with endocarditis, long-term daily use of aspirin does not reduce the risk of embolic events but may be associated with a higher risk of bleeding. In the acute phase of endocarditis, aspirin should be used with caution.

“…Aspirin levels, a critical correlate of antimicrobial efficacy in an animal model, were not monitored in this study. 289 Retrospective, observational studies [290][291][292][293][294][295][296] have examined the impact, if any, of long-term antiplatelet therapy before the onset of IE on infection-related outcomes. Findings from these investigations have been mixed in terms of IE-related outcomes.…”

“…Na podstawie niektórych badań kohortowych wykazano możliwe obniżenie odsetka powikłań zatorowych [257] lub postępu IZW w analizowanych podgrupach pacjentów przyjmujących leki przeciwpłytkowe [469], ale wyniki badań są sprzeczne [470,471].…”

“…Consistent with this, a recent study has examined the effect of antiplatelet drug Reopro (abciximab) in the treatment of sepsis in mice [113] and the use of cyclooxygenase inhibitors, e.g. aspirin and inbuprofen continue to be investigated [114][115][116][117]. Critically, future therapies must balance immune function and haemostatic function of platelets making thorough understanding of platelet-bacterial interactions and bacterial induced platelet activation essential for future drug development.…”
