“…The importance of tiller position and age in determining which tillers become reproductive was evident in both seasons. In the first season Tiller 2, which was initiated earlier and had more daughter tillers than Tiller 5 (Phillips et al 1996), had a higher proportion of mature reproductive tillers than Tiller 5. This response is believed to have been due to the Tiller 2 daughter tillers having being initiated earlier than those of Tiller 5 and so were better developed suggesting that tiller age, perhaps through its relationship with tiller developmental stage, influences reproductive tiller initiation.…”

“…Details of the study site, treatments and procedure are given in the first paper of this series (Phillips et al 1996). For details on the N-application rates and scheduling refer to Table 2 in Phillips et al (1996).…”

“…Details of the study area, treatments and procedure are given in the first paper of this series (Phillips et al 1996). In summary the treatments were two cultivars, two N-fertilizer levels, four close-down dates and six row spacing / seeding rate combinations.…”

“…The effect of management and environmental factors on tiller initiation has been described in several publications (e.g. Phillips et al 1996), but only limited information is available on the effects of management on tiller mortality. Tiller mortality is believed to increase as plant density and rates of tiller initiation increase, due to increased competition for light and nutrients (Langer 1963).…”
