SUMMARYHigh gestational loads result in fetuses that occupy a large proportion of the body cavity and may compress maternal organs. Compression of the lungs results in alterations in breathing patterns during gestation, which may affect the energetic cost of breathing. In this study, the energetic cost of breathing during gestation was determined in the viviparous skink Tiliqua rugosa. Radiographic imaging showed progressive lung compression during gestation and a 30% reduction in the lung inflation index (rib number at which the caudal margin of the lung was imaged divided by total rib number). Pneumotachography and open flow respirometry were used to measure breathing patterns and metabolic rates. Gestation induced a twofold increase in minute ventilation via increases in breathing frequency, but no change in inspired tidal volume. The rates of O 2 consumption and CO 2 production did not change significantly during gestation. Together, these results suggest that a relative hyperventilation occurs during gestation in T. rugosa, which in turn suggests that diffusion and/or perfusion limitations may exist at the lung during gestation. The energetic cost of breathing was estimated as a percentage of resting metabolic rate using hypercapnia to stimulate ventilation at different stages of pregnancy. The energetic cost of breathing in non-pregnant lizards was 19.96±3.85% of resting metabolic rate and increased threefold to 62.80±10.11% during late gestation. This significant increase in the energetic cost of breathing may have significant consequences for energy budgets during gestation.

The metabolic-level boundaries (MLB) hypothesis and the cell metabolism (CM) hypothesis have been proposed to explain the body mass scaling of metabolic rate. The MLB hypothesis focuses mainly on the influence of the metabolic level on the relative importance of volume and surface area constraints. The CM hypothesis focuses on the variation of cell size as the body grows. The surface area to volume ratio of individual cells may vary among species with different cell sizes, by which surface area constraints on metabolic scaling may change according to the MLB hypothesis. The present study aimed to extend the MLB and the CM hypotheses by proposing that, in addition to metabolic level, the varying cell surface area constraints among species also influence the intraspecific scaling exponents. The red blood cell area (S), and intraspecific scaling exponents for resting (b R ) and maximum metabolic rates of four species of cyprinids were assessed. The scaling exponents varied among species, but mass-specific resting metabolic rates (RMR) of each species were similar. No significant correlation was found between S and mass-specific RMR among species. As predicted, a significantly negative relationship exists between S and b R among species. The results suggest that the varying b R could be attributed to cell size differences among species, as those with larger cells may face stronger surface boundary limits, as predicted by the MLB hypothesis. This mechanism represents an additional way of relating the MLB and the CM hypotheses and does not exclude another mechanism based on the recent contextual multimodal theory.

The effects of acute temperature change and the following two weeks of acclimation from the initial 25°C to 15, 20, 30, and 35°C on the respiratory metabolism of the snakehead (Channa argus), a species tolerant to wide temperature range were examined in this study. The resting metabolic rate (RMR), ventilation frequency (VF), and several hematological parameters were determined. RMR of the fish post either acute temperature change or chronic acclimation was positively correlated with temperature, and exhibited V-shaped Q 10 values change vs temperature, which suggests that the snakehead has a varying thermal metabolic sensitivity dependent on temperature range. The decreased Q 10 value for RMR post chronic acclimation suggests that the metabolic thermal sensitivity of the snakehead can be reduced by acclimation. The VF increased with increasing temperature slower than RMR, which suggests that regulation of VF alone may not be sufficient to satisfy the oxygen demand of the snakehead as temperature increases. Cold compensation was observed in VF, but not RMR, which could be due to a decreasing oxygen exchange capacity of the gill during cold acclimation. Thus, the compensation in VF of cold acclimated fish may be necessary to maintain oxygen supply.
