Effect of Medium-chain Triglycerides on the Postprandial Triglyceride Concentration in Healthy Men

Abstract: This study compared the serum lipid concentrations after a single dose of medium-chain triglycerides (MCT) or long-chain triglycerides (LCT) between individuals grouped according to the body mass index (BMI). Twenty-five males participated as volunteers, the test diet containing 10 g of MCT or LCT. Blood samples were collected up to 6 h after the intake of a test diets. The LCT diet resulted in significantly greater increases in areas under the curves (AUCs) for serum and chylomicron triglyceride in the BMI > … Show more

“…In the present study, similar effects on body composition were obtained with one-half of the MCT intake (5 g instead of 10 g) compared with two previous studies. On the other hand, we reported previously that the postprandial triglyceride level in the subjects with BMI ≥ 23 kg/m 2 after ingestion of 10 g of MCT was significantly less than LCTs (24). Many investigators indicated that visceral fat accumulation was associated with dyslipidemia and atherosclerosis (4-6).…”

“…MCT had reducing effects not only on postprandial TG but also on fasting TG levels in humans. In 25 male subjects with BMIX23 kg/m 2 , the intake of 10 g MCT induced lower postprandial TG as compared with the intake of 10 g LCT (Kasai et al, 2003a). In another double-blind crossover study, the subjects ingested a liquid diet containing 20 g/d of MLCT or soybean oil in addition to their regular diets.…”

“…14,[17][18][19][20] On the contrary, some have reported a positive role of MCFAs in lowering blood TG. 8,21) We have reported that MLCT reduced blood TG in Chinese hypertriglycerideamic subjects. 22) These different results might be attributed to the different subjects chosen.…”
