Effect of melatonin supplementation on endothelial function in heart failure with reduced ejection fraction: A randomized, double‐blinded clinical trial

Abstract: Background This study aimed to investigate the effect of melatonin supplementation on endothelial function in patients with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF). Methods This is an analysis of the MeHR trial, a randomized double‐blinded placebo‐controlled clinical trial with two parallel arms of 1:1. Oral 10 mg melatonin tablets or placebo was administered for 24 weeks. Deference in the percentage of flow‐mediated dilatation (FMD) after the intervention was the primary outcome. Results Ninety‐t… Show more

“…Other studies have shown that melatonin improves outcomes in patients with heart failure and is considered a preventive and adjunctive curative measure in these patients [ 123 ]. A randomized double-blinded placebo-controlled clinical trial with two parallel arms using either placebo or oral 10 mg melatonin supplementation per day for twenty-four weeks in patients with heart failure and reduced ejection fraction observed improvements in endothelial function in those who did not also have diabetes [ 125 ].…”

“…Therefore, melatonin should be considered as an important element of MT and CT of cardiovascular disorders. In recently published paper, evaluation of the effect of melatonin on endothelial function in HF explored that oral melatonin for 24 weeks had a beneficial effect on endothelial function in patients with HF with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) ( 499 ).…”
