Highly filled graphite polybenzoxazine composites as bipolar plate material for polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) are developed. At the maximum graphite content of 80 wt % (68 vol %), storage modulus was increased from 5.9 GPa of the neat polybenzoxazine matrix to 23 GPa in the composite. Glass transition temperatures (T g ) of the composites were ranging from 176 C to 195 C and the values substantially increased with increasing the graphite contents. Thermal conductivity as high as 10.2 W/ mK and electrical conductivity of 245 S cm 21 were obtained in the graphite filled polybenzoxazine at its maximum graphite loading. The obtained properties of the graphite filled polybenzoxazine composites exhibit most values exceed the United States department of energy requirements for PEMFC applications.

A single cell of direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) typically delivers an electrical potential between 0.5 and 1 V; thus DMFCs are assembled in parallel to meet power demands (1–5 kW). Bipolar plates (BPs) are the primary components connecting a single cell to the adjacent cells so that they provide optimum electrical conductivity. The objective of this research is to reduce the volume resistance of BPs made from a polypropylene/carbon composite by utilizing a metal insert technique. A major obstacle when it comes to molding composite plates inserted by a thin metal sheet is the delamination of material layers after the cooling process. The delamination issue is due to different surface polarities between metal and polypropylene-composite surfaces. One of the strategies to solve this issue is to modify the surface of one layer for creating similarity of the surface polarity. A metal sheet surface was coated with graphene using a cold spraying technique to enhance adhesion ability. The suitable spraying conditions were determined by experimenting with varying temperature, pressure, graphene quantity and graphene types. The effectiveness of surface modification by the graphene spraying technique was assessed by a surface morphology observation, an electrical conductivity measurement and DMFC performance tests. Results were interesting, they indicated that when DMFC was assembled with silver sheet, inserted BPs provided 25.13 mW/cm2 of power density, 3,350.7 mWh of generated energy and 67% of efficiency. This highlights that the performance of a BP prototype is superior to the performance of a commercial composite bipolar plate.

AbstrakProton Exchange Membran fuel cell (PEMFC) merupakan jenis sel bahan bakar yang paling sederhana serta merupakan alternatif yang menjanjikan untuk sumber listrik. Komponen yang terpenting dari PEMFC adalah pelat bipolar karena 80% dari total volume, 70% dari total berat, dan 60% dari total biaya produksi. Untuk itu diperlukan pelat bipolar yang mudah diproduksi secara massal sehingga dapat tercapai pemenuhan keefektifan dan keefisiensian dalam produksi pelat bipolar PEMFC. Pada penelitian ini digunakan dispersi metode kering atau dry, Komposit yang digunakan berupa polimer sebagai matriks serta grafit dari limbah pabrik dan Carbon black (CB) dari bahan alam serabut kelapa sebagai penguat yang dibuat dari pembakaran pada suhu 1300 o C dalam kondisi inert. Kemudian pembentukkan menggunakan hotpress dengan tekanan 55 tonf/s, 150 o C selama 60 menit dengan dimensi 5x5x(0,2-0,4) cm 3 . Hasil tertinggi dari penelitian ini adalah nilai konduktivitas sebesar 20 S/cm. Sehingga dispersi dengan metode kering ini dapat dijadikan alternatif peningkatan konduktivitas pada pembuatan bahan material untuk aplikasi bipolar plate PEMFC. AbstractProton Exchange Fuel Cell Membrane (PEMFC) is the simplest type of fuel cell and is a promising alternative to power sources. The most important component of PEMFC is bipolar plate because 80% of total volume, 70% of total weight, and 60% of total production cost. Therefore, it is necessary for bipolar plates to be mass-produced to achieve the fulfillment of effectiveness and efficiency in the production of bipolar plates PEMFC. In this research, dry or dry method dispersion is used. The composites used are the polymer as matrix and graphite from factory waste and Carbon black (CB) from natural material of coconut fiber as an amplifier made from burning at 1300 o C in inert condition. Then, the formation using hot press with pressure 55 tonf/s, 150 o C for 60 minutes with dimension 5x5x (0,2-0,4) cm 3 . The highest result of this research is conductivity value of 20 S/cm. Thus, the dispersion by this dry method can be used as an alternative to increasing the conductivity in the manufacture of materials for PEMFC bipolar plate applications.
