Effect of methylation of ionic liquids on the gas separation performance of ionic liquid/metal–organic framework composites

Abstract: [BMIM][PF6] and its methylated form, [BMMIM][PF6] were incorporated into CuBTC to examine the effect of methylation of ionic liquids (ILs) on the gas separation performance of the corresponding IL/metal–organic framework (MOF) composites.

“…To elucidate the effect of IL incorporation on MOFs with different properties, we compared the gas‐separation performances of the [BMIM][BF 4 ]/MIL‐53(Al) and [BMIM][PF 6 ]/MIL‐53(Al) composites with those of previously reported composites [BMIM][BF 4 ]/CuBTC, [BMIM][PF 6 ]/CuBTC, [BMIM][BF 4 ]/ZIF‐8, and [BMIM][PF 6 ]/ZIF‐8 (all of these composites had comparable near‐saturation IL loadings) . The ideal CO 2 /CH 4 and CO 2 /N 2 selectivities of [BMIM][BF 4 ]‐ and [BMIM][PF 6 ]‐incorporated CuBTC, ZIF‐8, and MIL‐53(Al) are shown as a function of pressure in the Supporting Information, Figure S10. As shown in Figure a, b, the incorporation of [BMIM][BF 4 ] and [BMIM][PF 6 ] into CuBTC decreased the CO 2 /CH 4 selectivity of the MOF, which was attributed to the open metal sites in CuBTC .…”
