Effect of mineral matters in biomass on the gasification rate of their chars

Abstract: In order to develop the effective utilization of biomass, the gasification behavior (changes in gasification rates against conversion) of various chars prepared from biomass at 1,000°C was studied. The gasification rate of char with CO 2 measured at 900°C by a thermogravimetric balance was affected by the content of indigenous mineral matter such as calcium and potassium. The gasification behavior of chars were classified into following three groups: (1) the gasification rate reached a maximum in the higher co… Show more

“…They concluded that both metals enhanced the char gasification rate compared to the raw wood char [2]. In a recent study Suzuki et al showed that by adding both Ca and K to an acid treated sample the reactivity of the untreated wood sample could be reproduced, thus showing that the reaction rate during char gasification of woody biomass was strongly dependent on these two elements [26]. The authors did not, however, specify the level of loading.…”

“…These conditions are chosen to maximize the production of liquid products. Gasification involves the oxidation of the char with a sub-stoichiometric amount of oxygen in a reactive atmosphere containing oxygen, steam or carbon dioxide as the reactive phase (Suzuki et al, 2011).…”
