Effect of molar ratio [NCO]/[OH] groups during prepolymer chains extending step on the morphology and selected mechanical properties of final bio‐based thermoplastic poly(ether‐urethane) materials

Abstract: The main aim of this work was to investigate the effect of [NCO]/[OH] molar ratio used during the prepolymer chain extending step (with bio‐based diols) on the chemical structure, and thermomechanical and mechanical properties of thermoplastic poly(ether‐urethane)s. Thermoplastic poly(ether‐urethane)s were obtained from bio‐based polyol (polytrimethylene ether glycol), bio‐based glycol (1,4‐butanediol or 1,3‐propanediol), and 4,4'diphenylmethane diisocyanate via a prepolymer route. In the first step, the prepo… Show more

“…Isocyanate index NCO:OH=1.1:1 in S-TPU(PCL)1.1 might have contributed to the partial cross-linking of polymer chains, which is manifested by better mechanical properties, significantly higher elongation at break, and higher (~91°ShA) hardness than S-TPU(PCL)0.9 sample (~84°ShA). These observations were consistent with the research that was carried out by Kasprzyk et al [40], in which, among others, the influence of the isocyanate index on selected mechanical properties of polyesterurethanes was examined.…”

“…The most of presented TPUs based on poly ether polyols showed tensile strength in the range from 4 to 40 MPa, elongation at break up to 900%, hardness up to 30 °ShD, and Young's modulus in the range from 18 to 60 MPa. Materials obtained in this work possess mechanical properties comparable with other presented works [7,13,18,49,[49][50][51][52].…”

“…This observation is connected to higher content of hard segments in samples (PO3G1000_0.95, PO3Gmix_0.9 and PO3Gmix_0.95). According to the literature, TPUs showed the T HS of < 100 °C, and the melting temperature of HS of > 100 °C [13,47].…”
