Aim of the resent study was to determine impacts of feeding milk supplemented with propolis thyme, or both, as antioxidants, on growth efficiency, liver function, kidney function, total antioxidant capacity, and immune response of Friesian calves from 7 to 105 days of age as an experimental period. Newborn male calves (n=20) weighing 37.92±0.63 kg were divided into 4 groups, five calves/group. The first group (G1, control) included animals without treatment. During the whole suckling period each animal in G2, G3, and G4 daily received milk supplemented with propolis (5 g), thyme oil (2 ml), or 5 g propolis plus 2 ml thyme oil, respectively. Results showed that animals in fed both propolis and thyme combination showed the highest LBW, total gain, counts and percentages of blood cells, hemoglobin, total proteins and their fractions, total lipids, total cholesterol, and glucose, and the lowest urea and creatinine levels (P<0.05). Plasma immunoglobulins (IgG, IgA, and IgM) and total antioxidant capacity increased to the maximal values, while AST and ALT activities decreased to the minimum values in G4. Feeding Friesian calves on milk supplied with propolis (5 g) plus thyme oil (2 ml) per calf during the suckling period can improve growth performance, general health status, immune response, and total antioxidant capacity. From an economical point of view, this treatment could increase profits by reducing morbidity, diarrhea cases, and mortality, and improving the performance of breeding male calves during suckling and the early post-weaning period.

This experiment was conducted to study the effect of supplementation of urea mineral molasses block (UMMB) containing variable levels of urea and bentonite on nutrient utilization and economics of feeding of crossbred calves. Twenty four male crossbred calves were divided into four equal groups following completely randomized design and fed individually for 120 days. In Group 1, 70% of crude protein (CP) requirement was met through feeding of concentrate mixture and remaining CP was supplied through UMMB and ad lib. wheat straw (control). In Groups 2, 3 and 4, the feeding regimen followed was same as that of control except that UMMB was replaced with UMMB-A, UMMB-B, UMMB-C which vary in physical composition (wheat bran, urea, cement and bentonite content). There was no significant difference in feed intake and digestibility of macro-nutrients among the groups. Intake of UMMB was significantly lower in Group 4 as compared to the other groups. The nitrogen and phosphorus intake, excretion and retention was non-significant among the groups. A significant increase in calcium intake in Group 1 was observed. The excretion of calcium through faeces and calcium balance was non-significant among the groups. The feeding cost per kg bodyweight gain (`) was higher in Group 1 followed by 3, 2 and 4, respectively. On basis of present results, it may be concluded that supplementation of UMMB containing 15% urea and 10% cement can replace 30% crude protein of concentrate mixture without any adverse effect on feed intake, digestibility and nutrient utilization of crossbred calves.

Application of fenugreek in ruminant feed: implications for methane emissions and productivity

Background Human demand for meat and dairy products will increase as a result of economic development and population growth, and the farming of ruminants, such as cattle and sheep, will also increase. Methane (CH4) emission from the enteric fermentation of ruminant livestock is a major source of greenhouse gas emissions and a significant contributor to global warming. Meanwhile, growth performance is often limited and animals are more vulnerable to diseases in high-density, intensive farming, greatly reducing livestock productivity, so developing ways to reduce CH4 emissions and improve ruminant productivity has become a research hotspot. Studies have reported that fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum L.) as feed additives have the potential to reduce ruminant methane and improve the productivity. However, systematic reviews of such studies are lacking. Methodology In this review, databases of Google Scholar, Web of Science, PubMed, Scopus and Science Direct were used for the literature search. The initial keywords search was fenugreek or Trigonella foenum-graecum L. For more focused search, we added terms such as methane, rumen fermentation, growth, milk production and antioxidants. All were done for ruminants. The literature that conforms to the theme of this article is selected, summarized, and finally completed this article. Results By regulating the rumen microbiome (suppressing protozoans, methanogenic bacteria, and fungi), fenugreek can lower CH4 emissions according to many in vitro anaerobic fermentation experiments. Fenugreek secondary metabolites (saponins and tannins) are responsible for this impact, but it is still unclear exactly how they work. Therefore, more long-term in vivo experiments are needed to verify its efficacy. Fenugreek is also rich in alkaloids, amino acids, flavonoids, saponins and phenolic acids. These compounds have been shown to have beneficial effects on ruminant growth, lactation, and total antioxidant capacity. Therefore, fenugreek has a great opportunity to develop into a new green feed additive. Conclusions This review provides a summary of the effect of fenugreek and its bioactive compounds on rumen fermentation, CH4 emissions and production performance by ruminants. In addition, based on the available data, the possible biochemical pathway of fenugreek to reduce CH4 emissions in ruminants was described. Overall, the livestock feed industry has the opportunity to develop natural, environmentally-friendly feed additives based on fenugreek.
