Effect of multi-strain probiotic (UB0316) in weight management in overweight/obese adults: a 12-week double blind, randomised, placebo-controlled study

Abstract: This clinical trial was carried out to assess the effects of multi-strain probiotic capsule (UB0316: Lactobacillus salivarius UBLS-22, Lactobacillus casei UBLC-42, Lactobacillus plantarum, UBLP-40, Lactobacillus acidophilus UBLA-34, Bifidobacterium breve UBBr-01, Bacillus coagulans Unique IS2 5×109 cfu each and fructo-oligosaccharide, 100 mg) on overweight/obesity-related parameters. “…While the recruitment target was met, 19% of the participants did not complete the trial. Losses to follow-up are common in long-term dietary interventions and other studies have reported attrition rates of up to 21% in a 12-week intervention study [27]. The 3month duration of our trial appeared to impact the attrition rate, as some participants found it difficult to maintain their adherence to the intervention for such a prolonged period.…”

“…There is an exponential increase in the attention paid to the potential modulation of gut dysbiotic microbiota through dietary probiotics supplementation to prevent and/or improve metabolic diseases, such as obesity, diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and their comorbidities [ 62 , 63 , 64 ]. On the one hand, the use of the specific probiotic supplementation formulas was well substantiated through activity results in modifying key clinical biomarkers and safety demonstration [ 41 , 46 , 50 ].…”

“…In line with the potential probiotic impact on metabolic syndrome, multistrain probiotic formulation UB0316, containing Lpb. plantarum UBLP-40, was recently applied as therapeutic intervention in patients affected by type-2 diabetes mellitus [190] and in a weight management clinical study [191].…”
