Effect of Multilayer Nanocomposite TiAlSiN/TiSiN/TiAlN Coating on Wear Behavior of Carbide Tools in the Milling of Hardened AISI D2 Steel

Abstract: Thin hard coatings are widely used in the protection of cutting tools, dies and molds to prolong their wear resistance and lifetime. Superior properties of different coatings can be combined with multilayer design, and especially a higher microhardness can be obtained by nanocomposite structures. In this study, a multilayer design composing of TiAlSiN, TiSiN and TiAlN layers was applied on carbide cutting tools. The top TiAlSiN layer has a nanocomposite structure of crystalline fcc-TiAlN and amorphous Si3N4 ph… Show more

“…For this reason, the increase in cutting power with the increase in cutting speed is due to the tool cutting edge geometry that changes with the wear of the tools, as can be stated in Refs. 9,22. In addition, it is seen that the cutting power varies according to the tool coating quality at the same cutting parameters.…”

“…In these manufacturing methods, CVD or PVD coated or uncoated carbide inserts are widely used in geometries suitable for many cutting conditions. [8][9][10][11] Tools with PVD coated are generally thinner and have a low coefficient of friction. It is an excellent choice when it comes to finish operations.…”

“…When the thickness of AlN layer is 2 nm, the intensity of the diffraction peak corresponding to the nanomultilayers is the highest, and the largest shift angle is 0.14°. According to the Bragg's equation [19][20][21], the interplanar spacings increase from 0.2236 nm to 0.2242 nm.…”
