Effect of nanoparticles on tensile, impact and fatigue properties of fibre reinforced plastics

Abstract: Advanced composite, fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP), has been favoured for certain aerospace, military, marine and automotive applications. Polymer nanocomposites containing layered silicates have attracted much attention. These exhibit increased modulus, decreased thermal expansion coefficient, increased solvent resistance and enhanced ionic conductivity when compared to the polymer alone. Here we have developed eight different combinations of composites FRP with nanoclay (montmorillonite) by layered manufactu… Show more

“…Discontinuous Fibers : Various types of discontinuous reinforcements ranging from nanoscale fibers, such as silicate dioxide (SiO 2 ) nanoparticles, graphene oxide, and carbon black; micrometer‐scale fibers of alpha‐alumina powder, ferromagnetic fibers, titanium carbide (TiC),[18a] bioglass,[51b] and SiC; to milli‐scale glass fiber[51a,57] have been used to create FRPC in SLA. Matrix materials used are generally photosensitive polyacrylate resin,[51,52,57b,58] although polyester resin and epoxy resin have also been attempted.…”

“…Nano fillers also play an important role in hybrid composites to improve the mechanical and tribological properties. [11][12][13] Suresha et al 14 conclude that mechanical and tribological properties of the composites are increased by filling the nanoclay with short carbon fiber in the polyamide66/polypropylene composites. Addition of 4 wt.% of nano-T i O 2 , significantly improves the wear resistance and load-carrying capacity of the hybrid glass/PTFE fabric composites.…”

“…There is a severe aero-heating when an aircraft cruises at high velocity in atmosphere. To avoid the damage, the huge aerodynamic heat on the fuselage structures needs to be dispersed by the thermal protection system of vehicles (Nagalingam et al 2010;Prabhu Swamy et al 2010;Hegde et al 2012;Lu and Liu 2012a). In fact, the dispersed aerodynamic heat is a waste of energy.…”
