Effect of neodymium‐doped titanium dioxide nanoparticles on the structural, mechanical, and electrical properties of poly(butyl methacrylate) nanocomposites

Abstract: Nanocomposites based on neodymium-doped titanium dioxide (Nd-TiO 2 )/poly(n-butyl methacrylate) (PBMA) have been prepared by an in situ polymerization of butyl methacrylate monomer with varying concentrations of Nd-TiO 2 nanoparticles. The resulting nanocomposites have been analyzed by ultraviolet (UV)-Visible spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscope (SEM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC),… Show more

“…A broad peak around 3431 cm −1 and a peak at 1614 cm −1 found in the spectra of nanoparticles indicate the existence of surface‐bound water molecules . From the FT‐IR spectrum of PANI/PTZ blend, the absorption peaks at 3444, 1595 and 1475 cm −1 are the stretching and bending vibrations of NH and CC bond of the quinoid and benzenoid ring of aromatic compound . The characteristic blend peak at 1305 cm −1 is assigned to the C‐N stretching vibration.…”

“…TiO 2 nanoparticles were synthesized via sol‐gel method according to our previously reported method . The titanium isopropoxide was dissolved in glacial acetic acid followed by the addition of water and stirred for 3 h. The titanium isopropoxide/acetic acid/water were maintained at 1:10:100 ratios.…”

“…The increased DC conductivity in the present study is mainly due to ordered arrangement of particles and the segmental motion of polymer molecules. In addition to this, the synergistic interaction developed between PANI and CuAl 2 O 3 creates more number of polarons and bipolarons are responsible for the higher conductivity . The increase in magnitude of DC conductivity is higher for 5 wt% CuAl 2 O 3 sample and the increasing trend of conductivity becomes slower when the loading of nanoparticles reached to 7wt%.…”

[32] The increase in magnitude of DC conductivity is higher for 5 wt% CuAl 2 O 3 sample and the increasing trend of conductivity becomes slower when the loading of nanoparticles reached to 7wt%. This is due to the clustering of nanoparticles inside the polymer.…”

“…In this context, poly(butyl methacrylate) (PBMA) got considerable attention due to the presence of polar groups, which eases the better dispersion of nanoparticles in the matrix. The effective dispersion of metal oxide nanoparticles in the polymer matrix could be easily achieved through the in situ polymerization method . This method is mostly employed by researchers for the development of polymer nanocomposites because the aggregation of nanoparticles can be controlled to a minimum and so have better dispersion in the polymer matrix…”
