Effect of New Pre-Emergence Herbicides on Quality and Yield of Potato and Its Associated Weeds

Abstract: Potato is an economically important vegetable crop in Egypt. Weed infestation, especially broad-leafed, during the vegetative growth stage substantially affects both crop yield and tuber quality. In the current study, the impact of new ready-mix pre-emergent herbicides on broadleaf weeds, tuber yield, and quality was evaluated. The two-year field experiment comprised the following treatments: (1) Un-weeded control, (2) Hand hoeing, (3) Sencor, (4) Ecopart, (5) Zeus, (6) Kroki, and (7) Flomex. The results showe… Show more

“…Bentazon did not significantly change either the content of chlorophyll a + b or the carotenoids content in soybean [64,65]. Moreover, the application of bentazon to potato fields caused an increase in the content of ascorbic acid in comparison with the control [66].…”

“…The results open a window to the possibility of using retentates extracted through sequential membranes to integrate weed control techniques and tools, particularly to formulate "bioherbicides" [36], namely, compounds of natural origin acting as pre-emergence herbicides that are able to prevent germinated weed seedlings from becoming established [67]. The use of this type of agrochemical has proved to be very useful in numerous crops such as wheat [68], maize [69], and vegetable crops [70,71]. Although our data show that the lower doses may have only a delaying effect, this property could be exploited in many crops to keep the field free of weeds only during the critical period of weed interference [72].…”

“…Then, the extraction was centrifuged at 3000 rpm for 15 min. The absorbance of leaves extracts supernatants were measured by spectrophotometer (Helios UVG1702E, England) at wavelengths (λ) 663-nm and 647-nm to determine total chlorophyll content and at 470-nm [ 65 ] to assay the total carotenoid content and following equations.…”
