Effect of Nitric Oxide on the Antifungal Activity of Oxidative Stress and Azoles Against Candida albicans

Abstract: Nitric oxide (NO) is a small molecule with a wide range of biological activities in mammalian and bacteria. However, the role of NO in fungi, especially Candida albicans, is not clear. In this study, we confirmed the generation of endogenous NO in C. albicans, and found that the production of endogenous NO in C. albicans was associated with nitric oxide synthase pathway. Our results further indicated that the production of endogenous NO in C. albicans was reduced under oxidative stress such as menadione or H 2… Show more

“…The role of NO in fungi has also been extensively studied. In Candida albicans, NO is involved in oxidative stress and azoles (31). In Trichoderma harzianum, NO can alleviate oxidative damage (32), and this effect was also demonstrated in P. eryngii var.…”

“…The role of nNO in airway fungal diseases is still unclear. Nitric oxide has been reported to be associated with fungal clearance in hypodermis [ 19 ]. On the other hand, fungal pathogen was proved to inhibit the activity of iNOS, resulting in a dose-dependant NO suppression in an animal model [ 20 ].…”

“…The situation in yeast is far less clear. Recently, in Candida albicans, a nitric oxide synthase pathway-like has been investigated [40], while in Saccharomyces cerevisiae, the flavoprotein Tah18 is involved in NO synthesis, and increases in this enzyme activity confer high-temperature stress tolerance to yeast [41]. TAH18 has an ortholog in C. albicans (orf19.2040), but its activity has yet to be confirmed.…”
