Effect of non‐surgical periodontal therapy on plasma homocysteine levels in Indian population with chronic periodontitis: a pilot study

Abstract: The rise and descent of plasma Hcy levels with periodontal inflammation and therapy, respectively, indicate a direct relationship of Hcy with chronic periodontitis. NSPT may be employed as an adjunctive Hcy Lowering Therapy, contributing towards primary prevention against CVD's.

“…The mean scores of GI were higher in Group III than in Group I. This finding was comparable to the previous study done by Bhardwaj et al where they observed that the mean PI and GI scores were high in chronic periodontitis compared to healthy patients [21]. Plaque is the primary disease-initiating factor that resulted in transition from health to gingivitis, and if left untreated gingivitis might progress to periodontitis [22].…”

“…Similar with autoimmune diseases, periodontal disease induces cellular DNA or RNA methylation that may result with Hcy release (Lazzerini et al, 2007). Accordingly, elevated plasma Hcy levels have been demonstrated in periodontitis (Bhardwaj et al, 2015; Joseph et al, 2011) and its reduction tendency after SRP (Mallapragada et al, 2017). As a mechanism, decreased FA causes MTHF reduction, Hcy methylation and related Hcy production increase (van Wersch, Janssens, & Zandvoort, 2002).…”

“…Homocysteine (Hcy) is a methionine metabolite mainly associated with vascular diseases (Skovby, Gaustadnes, & Mudd, 2010), interacts with vitamin B 6 and inhibits cystathionine‐β synthase activity (McCarty, 2000). Joseph, Nath, and Joseraj (2011) have shown elevated plasma Hcy in periodontitis, and Bhardwaj, Prabhuji, and Karthikeyan (2015) claimed a direct relationship between Hcy and periodontitis. Mallapragada, Kasana, and Agrawal (2017) supported this phenomenon upon observing Hcy decrease tendency after SRP.…”

“…Відомо, що в пацієнтів із запально-деструктивними захворюваннями пародонта визначають підвищений вміст ГЦ як у плазмі крові, так і у слині [11,39], особливо в осіб похилого й старечого віку (збільшений у понад 2 рази від норми), що агресивно діє на тканини, знижуючи захисні властивості порожнини рота, й ускладнює перебіг хронічного генералізованого пародонтиту (ХГП) [2,4,6,11,25,39,41,48,49].…”
