Effect of Normal Contact Vibration on Nano-Scale Friction

Abstract: In this work, we investigate the effect of contact vibration on the friction of sliding single asperity contacts of different adhesion strength over a wide range of load and vibration amplitude. We convert the amplitude of vibration to its equivalent modulation force and tip-oscillation velocity. We observe a logarithmic relationship between friction and the ratio of the modulation force to the normal force and between friction and the ratio of sliding velocity to the tip-oscillation velocity. We discuss these… Show more

“…Moreover, the high-energy electron beam used in SEM may impact the interfacial frictional properties of 1D materials in several ways: (i) inducing changes in the sample's morphology, potentially deviating from its native state; 202 (ii) generating electrostatic attraction forces that interfere with precise friction force measurements; (iii) triggering chemical reactions, altering the interfacial composition and inuencing observed frictional behavior; 203,204 and (iv) inducing residual stress in 1D NWs being tested and altering the accuracy of the indirect measurement strategies. 192 In addition, the manipulation of 1D materials in SEM processes potential obstacles, including the impact of manipulator vibration 199,[205][206][207][208][209] and the preload 200 of the manipulation tip, both may affect the result accuracy.…”

“…While in the analytical method, the displacement function needs to be determined first, and then the unknown parameters need to be calculated according to the boundary conditions, whose process is complicated and is not conducive to engineering application. The use of the reciprocity theorem of work can simplify the solution process [16], and the results have high reliability and strong applicability. The theorem of reciprocity of work means that when two sets of generalized forces act on a linear elastic body, the work done by the first set of force on the displacement caused by the second set of force is equal to the work done by the second set of force on the displacement caused by the first set of force.…”
