“…The NGOM region is crucial to many local shorebird populations as well as to many migrating bird species breeding in areas far from the Gulf, and shorebirds were the most affected tetrapod vertebrates during the DWH spill, showing a steep increase in mortality rates (Antonio et al, 2011). Species like laughing gull and brown pelican were seriously affected (Tran et al, 2014). According to estimates by Henkel et al (2012), it is possible that more than one million migratory shorebirds representing 28 species were exposed to some degree to DWH oil during their 2010-2011 non-breeding season.…”

“…Lendie Follett's paper "A Graphical Exploration of the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill" (Follett et al 2014) provides a comprehensive look at all of the data, with well-designed graphics produced using the ggplot2 package in R. You will see an approach to using the temperature and salinity to estimate the oil extent, and an excellent discussion of the issues arising from observational only measurements on the impact on the wildlife. The paper by Tran, Yazdanparast and Suess "Effect of Oil Spill on Birds: A Graphical Assay of the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill's Impact on Birds" (Tran et al 2014) focus on the impact on the wildlife, and utilized Google Fusion Tables and Maps to explore the data. The paper by Li, Gao, Xu and Rajaratnam "Detecting the Impact Area of BP Deepwater Horizon Oil Discharge: An Analysis by Time Varying Coefficient Logistic Models and Boosted Trees" (Li et al 2014) illustrates how modeling can be used to understand the spread of the oil.…”

“…On the other hand, the related researches on marine oil spill visualization mostly tend to 2D, but 3D aspects there still exist many defects in physical model, simulation effect and system functions aspect (Wang et al, 2004;Yu and Yin, 2011;Zhuang et al, 2007). Although many advanced systems ( Jeong et al, 2013;Tran et al, 2014;Varela et al, 2014;Chen, 2013;Kou, 2011;Li, 2013;Liu et al, 2010;Liu, 2010;Liu et al, 2001;Liu et al, 2004;Yin and Ren, 1996;Yu and Yin, 2011;Zhang, 2003;Zhuang et al, 2007) have been developed to help predict and process marine oil spill in the world, for exampleoil spill emergency prediction system, oil spill pollution and ecological damage assessment system, oil spill emergency decision support system, oil spill emergency response training system, and so on. These systems are usually high development cost and development cycle is long, and not for undersea oil spill.…”

“…Multiple types of oil spill were slowly changed from sea surface caused by the dock and ship collision to seabed caused by the blowout and the pipeline leakage (Guan et al, 2010;Li, 2013;Wang and Shen, 2006). In recent years, many serious oil spill accident were all derived from undersea oil spill in the world, such as the Deep-water Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico (Tran et al, 2014); and oil spilled from Seabed in Penglai 19-3 Oilfield Area. At present, most studies focus on the oil spill on the sea surface, especially domestic, less study on undersea oil spill simulation (Cui et al, 2010;Li, 2013;Mao et al, 2011;Yu and Yin, 2011).But compared with the oil spill on the sea surface, pipeline leakage and blowout or geologic oil spill bring higher challenge for oil seal and greater harm for marine environment.…”
