Effect of oral administration of β-glucans derived from Aureobasidium pullulans SM-2001 in model mice and rat with atopic dermatitis-like phenotypes

Abstract: In this study, we investigated the anti-atopic dermatitis (AD) activity of β-glucans derived from SM-2001 (βGdAP). βGdAP was orally administered to AD animal models such as vasodilation, allergic pruritus and contact dermatitis. Administration of βGdAP attenuated the amount of Evans blue solution on vasodilation rat. Scratching behaviors, secretion of histamine and ear thickness were significantly ( < 0.05) attenuated in the βGdAP-treated mouse groups. Interestingly, transcriptional expression of T-bet, a tran… Show more

“…Various strains of lactic acid bacteria have been reported to reduce allergic symptoms in mouse models and humans [19,20]. Previously, we have demonstrated that oral administration of β-1,3/1,6-glucan from Aureobasidium pullulans SM-2001 effectively attenuates AD-like phenotypes in animal models [21]. However, studies on the potential variation in the bioactivity of β-1,3/1,6-glucans from different sources and the synergistic immunomodulatory effects of β-1,3/1,6-glucan and L. plantarum on AD are still lacking.…”

“…On the other hand, the improvement of the skin lesion in the Synbio-glucan dietary treatment was significantly lower. Previous studies confirmed that the oral administration of β-glucan and probiotics alleviated AD significantly [ 14 , 27 ]. In the present study, the scores of skin lesions were similar to those of the positive control, but histological analysis showed improvement of the skin lesion compared to the control group.…”

“…Previous studies confirmed that this type of β-glucan prevents obesity and reduces blood glucose, cholesterol concentrations, and body weight [ 22 , 23 ]. Some studies used β-glucan to treat or prevent atopic dermatitis in vivo, but the β-glucan used was derived from algae and yeast not from cereals, such as oats [ 14 , 15 , 24 ].…”

“…The animal behavior did not change during the research. In these studies, the topical use of some substances (DNCB, DNFB and DEE) (13,15,18,(20)(21)(22)(23)(24)26), some nutrients (cow milk, red Korean ginseng) (16,21), UV radiations (25) and injections with Apigenin (19) could explain the appearance of skin lesions in AD.…”
