Effect of Oral Isotretinoin Treatment on Retinal Nerve Fiber Layer Thickness

Abstract: The use of oral isotretinoin treatment has increased in recent years. In addition, oral isotretinoin treatment has a broad adverse effect potential on the ocular system. The measurement of RNFL thickness, especially TL thickness, by OCT may be useful for detecting the possible toxic effect of oral isotretinoin therapy on RNFL.

“…Ucak et al published a trial in 2014, where they assessed possible toxic effects of the treatment with isotretinoin 0.5–2 mg/kg/day for 4–9 months on the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) and ganglion cell layer (GCL), and the results showed a significant decrease in posttreatment lower temporal (TL) values [ 48 ].…”

“…[11] Dinc et al [12] reported cases of decreased RNFL thickness and bilateral optical disc atrophy related to isotretinoin administration for the treatment of acne vulgaris. Ucak et al [13] reported the possible toxic effects of isotretinoinon RNFL, especially in the temporal layer. In the study conducted by Kapti et al [14] It is reported that isotretinoin has no effect on RNFL thickness We did not find a statistically significant difference in RNFL thickness in our study.…”

“…Regarding OECD countries, Uçak et al (2014) examined the relationship between carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) emissions and gross domestic product (GDP) for 20 high-income countries over the period 1961-2004. Their results have shown that there is a positive relationship between GDP and CO 2 , except for Norway.…”
