“…The present study shows that 3-day courses with 20 mg day-' omeprazole induce increases of pepsinogen A and C in both patients with duodenal ulcer and healthy volunteers. A similar result has previously been reported during treatment of healthy volunteers with higher doses of omeprazole for longer times (Festen et al, 1984(Festen et al, , 1986Ten Kate et al, 1988), but not yet after a low dose of 20 mg omeprazole for only 3 days. Furthermore, no studies on the effect of omeprazole on serum pepsinogen concentrations in duodenal ulcer patients have been published.…”

“…Information on the duration of the increases in serum pepsinogens after stopping omeprazole treatment is scanty. The only study related to this question comprised normal subjects only and showed that the increase of serum pepsinogens A after a 14-day treatment course with 30 mg omeprazole persisted for at least 1 week after stopping (Festen et al, 1984). The patterns were almost identical for both pepsinogens and no major changes in the pepsinogen ratios were observed.…”

“…During treatment with omeprazole elevated serum gastrin levels have been reported [25]. However, cimetidine, ranitidine and famotidine have only minimal effects on basal and postprandial serum gastrin concentration [26].…”

“…As the degree of acid reduction seems to be related to the AUC of omeprazole [11,12], it is not surprising that treatment with omeprazole leads to a rise in plasma gastrin level [13]. A significant increase in fasting plasma gastrin levels was observed during long term omeprazole treament, but not after a single dose of the drug [14].…”
