Effect of Organo Montmorillonite Nanoclay on Mechanical Properties Thermal Stability and Ablative Rate of Carbon fiber Polybenzoxazine Resin Composites

Abstract: Organo-Montmorillonite (o-MMT) nanoclay added polybenzoxazine resin (type I composites) were prepared with varying amounts of clay (0, 1, 2, 4 and 6 wt %). Clay dispersion, changes in curing behaviour and thermal stability were assessed in type I composites. Findings from these studies of type I composites were used to understand thermal stability, mechanical, and mass ablation rate behaviour of nanoclay added carbon fiber reinforced polybenzoxazine composites (type II). Interlaminar shear strength and flexura… Show more

“…It has been reported earlier that during decomposition of polybenzoxazine matrix two kinds of mechanisms are possible. [30,31] One mechanism is due to pyrolytic decomposition of benzoxazine matrix leading to the formation of char along with gaseous molecules such as CO 2 , H 2 O, CO and CH 4 . As observed from thermal studies, beyond about 230 C, the organoclay undergoes decomposition leading to the formation of small molecules such as O 2 , CO 2 , and CO.…”

“…Similar type of studies were extended to another set of composites obtained from commercially available benzoxazine resin. [ 31 ] In these works, MMT clay composite were prepared in two different steps, that is the monomer was obtained first which on treating with OMMT yields their respective composite.…”

“…The achievement of better property with the addition of clay along with the polymer matrix upto 5 wt% is attributed to the nanoclay platelets' increased interfacial area and the clay's excellent adhesion to the matrix. [ 32 ] On further addition of clay beyond 5 wt%, the ILSS value decreases and this may be due to the chances of the occurrence of agglomeration once the loading level of the filler reaches beyond the critical value. [ 33 ]…”

“…The literature reports the effect of different nanofillers on the cure of CE resin (Amirova et al, 2021), in particular the introduction of silica (Bershtein et al, 2021), POSS (Li et al, 2021) was widely investigated. Combination of carbon fibers and nanofillers for ablative purposes have been recently considered in the paper of Rao et al, 2021b, where the authors studied the effect of organo-FIGURE 7 | Impact strengths and flexural moduli of BA and BD resin (4,4′-bismaleimidodiphenylmethane (BDM) and renewable bis(5-allyloxy)-4-methoxy-2-methylphenyl) methane (ABE) from bio-based lignin derivative as a function of allyl to imide molar ratio (n) (A); Biobased thermosetting resins based on bismaleimide and allyl-etherified eugenol derivatives (B); T g and renewable carbon contents of BTP, BD and other eugenol derived BMI resins (C); TGA curves of cured AEG/BMI (EB) (allyl-etherified eugenol prepolymerized with 4,4′-bismaleimidodiphenylmethane, with allyl/maleimide unit ratios of 1/1, 1/2 and 1/3 (D) Reprinted with permission from (Neda et al 2014;Miao et al, 2019;Ge et al, 2017). In this context, research has moved towards obtaining cyanate ester thermosets by using anethole, resveratrol, vanillin, eugenol, and other lignin derivatives.…”
