Effect of organoclay on thermal and dynamic mechanical properties of novel thermoplastic polyurethane nanocomposites prepared by melt intercalation technique

Abstract: Polymer nanocomposites based on thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) containing organophilic montmorillonite (OMMT) were prepared by melt compounding method followed by compression molding. Different percentage of organically modified nanoclays (1, 3, 5, 7, and 9 wt%) was incorporated into the TPU matrix in order to examine the influence of the nanofillers on nanophase morphology and materials' properties. The microstructure morphology of the nanocomposites was examined by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), e… Show more

“…However, some amount of the nanoclay will be in the exfoliated state, which cannot be quantified using X-ray diffraction technique alone. Similar results of intercalation have been observed for Cloisite 30B-and Nanofil 919-based nanocomposites [19][20][21].…”

“…13. The semicircular nature of cole-cole curve is indicative of homogeneous morphology, whereas two phase systems show two modified circles [12,20]. In the present case, semicircular nature of the curves implies that the syntactic foam and the nanoclay reinforced systems are homogeneous.…”

“…Melt compounding processes using conventional high shear mixers have been regarded as an efficient way to fabricate polymer‐clay nanocomposites, especially effective for polar thermoplastics and thermoplastic elastomers such as nylons [13–15], polyesters [16–18], polyetherimide [19], and thermoplastic polyurethane [20, 21]. In the melt compounding process, the polymer chains diffuse into the galleries of the clay under a strong shear field if proper thermodynamic compatibility between the polymer and surface of the organoclay is provided.…”

“…However, in order to achieve exfoliation/intercalation of layered clays, some sophisticated operations, e.g. the solvent mixing method and the latex co‐coagulation technique, have been conducted, which greatly increase the fabrication cost and uncertainty of the performance . Thus, it becomes an urgent need to exploit the potential capacity of exfoliated nanoclays in reinforcing rubber, i.e.…”
