Environmental temperature rises are powerful stimuli that can alter both the sympathetic nervous system and the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenocortical axis (HPA). Heat stress has been shown to harm pregnancy outcomes such as causing spontaneous abortion, low birth weight, growth retardation and stillbirth. Supplementation of bee bread in pregnant rats under heat stress exposure has been shown to improve the pregnancy outcomes. However, whether supplementation of bee bread during heat stress exposure may also reduce the level of the stress hormone, corticosterone has yet been reported. Therefore, this study aims to determine the effect of bee bread on corticosterone level, progesterone level, oestradiol level and zonation of the adrenal cortex of pregnant rats under heat stress exposure. Pregnant rats were randomly categorised into four groups (n = 6): Control (C: standard feeding), Treatment 1 (T1: 0.5 g bee bread/kg body weight/ day), Treatment 2 (T2: standard feeding with heat exposure), and Treatment 3 (T3: 0.5 g bee bread/kg body weight/day with heat exposure). Bee bread (0.5 g/kg body weight/ day) was force-fed to pregnant rats through oral gavage beginning on day 0 of pregnancy and continuing until delivery. Heat stress was generated experimentally by putting both T2 and T3 rats in an egg incubator for 45 min daily at a temperature of 43°C till delivery. On a postnatal Day 21, dams were euthanised to assess serum corticosterone, progesterone, oestradiol levels and adrenal gland histology. Rats in the T2 group had a significantly (P < 0.05) increase in the zona fasciculata thickness (94.95 ± 1.55 ?m) and higher corticosterone levels (49.57 ± 1.57 ng/mL) compared with control. However, supplementation of bee bread during heat stress was able to show an improvement in adrenal zona fasciculata thickness by decreasing to 79.89 ± 3.08 ?m and corticosterone level reduced to 35.31 ± 1.73 ng/mL significantly (P < 0.05). Therefore, these findings may imply that bee bread is effective as a neutralizer in lowering the production of stress hormone.

This study investigated the beneficial effect of phytogenic extracts on semen quality, reproductive hormones, thyroid activity, immunity, hepatic antioxidant activity, and fertility in rabbit bucks. We divided 70 bucks into seven groups (10 in each). Group 1 was fed a basal diet (control); groups 2, 3, and 4 were fed the control diet with 30, 60, and 90 mg/kg of turmeric, respectively; and groups 5, 6, and 7 were fed the control diet with 50, 75, and 100 mg/kg of garlic extract, respectively, for 8 weeks. Rectal and skin temperatures decreased, while follicle‐stimulating hormone, luteinizing hormone, triiodothyronine, thyroxine, testosterone, immunoglobulin M, tumor necrosis factor‐alpha, and interleukin‐6 in blood serum and glutathione peroxidase in the liver increased in all groups (p < .05). Garlic extract (100 mg/kg diet) increased adenosine triphosphate and glutathione in the liver tissues. All treatments significantly increased net semen volume, percentages of progressive motility, livability, curled tail, and intact acrosomes of spermatozoa, sperm cell concentration, and outputs of total and motile spermatozoa, while significantly decreased percentage of sperm abnormality. In conclusion, dietary supplementation of turmeric or garlic extract can be used as a suitable tool for enhancing the hepatic antioxidant activity, immunity, and semen quality in rabbit bucks.

This study evaluated the beneficial impact of daily oral administration with date palm pollen (DPP) on the reproductive efficiency, parameters of blood, ovarian activity and reproductive hormonal profiles in NZW rabbit does. Does (n=60) were divided into 3 treatments (20 in each) administered with 0, 250 and 500 mg DPP/doe dissolved in distilled water (2 ml) respectively, for 35 d premating. Does were naturally mated with adult NZW bucks at the termination of treatment period (35 d). Both levels of DPP significantly increased pregnancy and viability rates, and litter characteristic at birth and weaning as compared to control. Oral treatment with both DPP levels significantly increased Hb, RBCs and hematocrit, serum total proteins, albumin, globulin and glucose and high-density lipoprotein, while significantly decreased WBCs serum total cholesterol, triglycerides, and lowdensity lipoprotein compared with control. Does receive both DPP levels had significantly improved kidney and liver functions, antioxidants capacity and immune response markers than the control group. Both levels of DPP showed significantly (P<0.05) remarkable improvement of estrogen, progesterone and prolactin of rabbit does comparing with control. Rate of ovulation and embryo quality and quality were increased (P<0.05) by DPP levels comparing with control group. The data showed that orally administration of DPP may help in improving the reproductive efficiency of does via adjusting the hematological and metabolites of blood, reducing lipid profile and peroxidation, improving the antioxidant capacity and immunity, and improving the ovarian activity and embryo quality.Rabbits, date palm pollen, reproductive efficiency, antioxidants, immunity
