Effect of Parenteral Antioxidant Supplementation During the Dry Period on Postpartum Glucose Tolerance in Dairy Cows

Abstract: BackgroundExacerbated postparturient insulin resistance (IR) has been associated with several pathologic conditions in dairy cattle. Oxidative stress (OS) plays a causative role in IR in humans, and an association, but not direct relationship, between OS and IR recently has been reported in transition dairy cattle.HypothesisSupplementation with antioxidants shortly before calving improves glucose tolerance after parturition in dairy cattle.AnimalsTen late‐pregnant Holstein cows entering their 2nd to 5th lactat… Show more

“…The SeE [10 mL of SeE, 0.5 mg of Se as sodium selenite, and 56 IU of vitamin E as dl-α-tocopherol acetate per mL, a commercial product; Eurovet Vitamin 50E+SE (Eurovet Animal Health BV, Bladel, the Netherlands), registration number: 12,092,219] was intramuscularly injected first 21 d before the expected calving date, at parturition, and 21 d after calving. The nonsupplemented groups were intramuscularly injected with 10 mL of isotonic saline (Abuelo et al, 2016). All cows were transferred to calving pens bedded with straw near the parturition time.…”

“…Antioxidant supplements can decrease negative effects of BCS loss after calving, and supplementation with Se-vitamin E (SeE) can reduce mastitis, retained placenta, days to estrus, and abortion in dairy cows (Hoedemaker et al, 2009). It was reported that SeE supplementation in the pre-calving period can increase insulin sensitivity, immune responses, and antioxidant capacity after parturition (Abuelo et al, 2016;Mehdi and Dufrasne, 2016). Pilarczyk et al (2012) reported that serum glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) had the highest activity in the first stage of lactation in dairy cows, which is reflective of biologically active Se level in the body.…”

“…The values derive from calculations denoting glucose half-life time (GHLT), glucose area equivalent (GA), and the rate at which the metabolite is cleared from the blood, among others (Freyer et al, 2004). In cattle, ivGTT is commonly used to test for conditions such as insulin resistance (De Koster and Opsomer, 2013) or determine the levels of insulin sensitivity (Abuelo et al, 2016). The test can also predict changes in nonesterified fatty acids (Boston et al, 2008) and determine the effects of certain diets on energy metabolism (Kneeskern et al, 2016).…”
