Effect of Partial Replacement of Forage Neutral Detergent Fiber with By-Product Neutral Detergent Fiber in Close-Up Diets on Periparturient Performance of Dairy Cows

Abstract: The objective of this study was to determine the effect of partial replacement of forage neutral detergent fiber (NDF) with by-product NDF in close-up diets of dairy cattle on periparturient metabolism and performance. Holstein cows (n = 45) and heifers (n = 19) were fed corn silage-based diets containing 1) 30% oat hay, or 2) 15% oat hay and 15% beet pulp from d -21 relative to expected parturition until parturition. After parturition, all animals received the same lactation diet. Animals were group-fed from … Show more

“…The particle size distribution of the TMR was determined weekly using a Penn State Particle Separator to detect sorting. Briefly, the particle size distribution of diets and orts were compared to determine if sorting occurred (≥ 15 percentage unit change on the19-mm screen) [18,19]. …”

“…To increase the size of the data set, additional observations were added from 6 published studies that reported the concentration of ADIN in the ration and total tract N digestibility (MacGregor et al, 1983;Edionwe and Owen, 1989;Weiss et al, 1989;Dann et al, 2006Dann et al, , 2007Vargas-Bello-Pérez et al, 2008). Additionally, various feedstuffs such as barley, soybean silage, alfalfa silage, corn dried distillers grains, beet pulp, and a corn milling coproduct mix were included in the rations of the published studies.…”

“…7.060 of AOAC (1990). Indigestible NDF was used as an internal marker to estimate apparent nutrient digestibility and fecal output (Cochran et al, 1986;Dann et al, 2007). Preparation of feed, orts and fecal residues from in situ incubation followed by iNDF extraction was similar to the technique described by Ellis et al (1984) for preparation of indigestible NDF (i.e., NDF remaining after 144 h of in situ incubation).…”
