Effect of peer ply and cooling rate on the tensile properties of Al/Gf/PP laminate prepared by hot pressing

Abstract: The glass fiber-reinforced polypropylene/AA2024 hybrid composite (short for Al/Gf/PP laminate) was prepared by hot pressing with anodized 2024-T3 aluminum alloy as the skin and thermoplastic glass fiber-reinforced polypropylene core as a substitute of thermosetting glass fiber-reinforced polymer (based on epoxy) in order to increase the productivity and reduce the production costs during manufacturing procedure. The effect of peel ply (release cloth) and cooling rate on the laminate was investigated elaboratel… Show more

“…18 It is called aluminum/glass fiber/polypropylene (Al/Gf/PP) laminate and consists of alternating layers of aluminum alloy 6061-T6 layer and glass fiber-reinforced polypropylene layer. 19 The vacuum resin infusion method and thermal molding process are combined for manufacturing FML sandwich composite structures with a 3D core. First, the face-core bonding property of sandwich composite structures was investigated through the climbing drum peel test.…”

“…3 They also allow to tailor the mechanical behavior of structures through several properties of the constituent layers. 4 Particle reinforced-aluminum matrix composites (PR-AMCs) are well known to have high specific strength and stiffness, 5 improved elevated temperature properties 6 and wear resistance. 7 2xxx series Al alloys, the agehardenable Al-Cu-Mg alloys, are widely chosen as the matrix material because of their excellent fracture toughness and good creep resistance.…”

“…Therefore, efficient reduction methods of curing residual stress are always necessary. In recent years, many preparations, forming and processing methods of GLARE have been constantly developed to meet the requirements of different fields: hot pressing, a non-autoclave preparation method, is now often used to manufacture FMLs products [ 14 , 15 ]. Additionally, shot peening, a kind of flexible forming process, is used to realize complex forming of FMLs.…”
