Abstract:The disposal of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) in sanitary landfills produces leachate, whose composition changes depending on the microbial community and the environmental conditions. However, these changes cannot be observed in sanitary landfill because of the superposition of cells, which makes it difficult to determinate the relationship among the phases of biodegradation of MSW, the composition of the leachate and the time required for complete stabilization of the waste. This illustrates the importance of building experimental cells that simulate landfill to monitor the leachate over a long period. This study aimed to analyze the composition of the leachate generated from an experimental cell built on the Delta A sanitary landfill of Campinas City, Brazil, over 945 days. The leachate showed a transition from an acidic anaerobic phase to a methanogenic phase within approximately 100 days. By the one-hundredth day, the leachate showed a characteristically low pH, between 5.0 and 6.0 and a high Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) and Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) such as a young leachate with high biodegradability. Moreover, there was an intense leaching of the metals Cd, Fe, Pb and Mn, with concentrations higher than those allowed for the release in water bodies, according to Brazilian law. After the one-hundredth day, the leachate was characterized as stabilized. The pH increased and the concentration of volatile fatty acid, COD and BOD decreased. Co, Zn, Ni and Cu were leached. The potentially toxic metal concentrations found in the leachate also were above the values allowed by Brazilian law.

In this paper, Al2SO4 was added to persulfate as an activator to increase reaction and to help insure oxidation during the leachate oxidation process. The effect of Al2SO4, persulfate dosage, pH and reaction time on COD, color and ammonia removal was investigated during landfill leachate treatment. A face centered composite design (FCCD) was employed to model and optimize the process. The results of the analysis of variance (ANOVA) showed that Al2SO4 has a significant effect on the selected responses. Furthermore, a second order model was selected to describe the relationship between input factors and the three responses. The maximum removal for COD, color and NH3-N was reported as 67%, 81%, and 48%, respectively, by using 5.5 ml from each persulfate and Al2SO4 dosage (0.2 M), 6 pH, and 105 (min) reaction time. The performance of combined S2O8 2− /Al2SO4 process compared with S2O8 2− alone and Al2SO4 alone, and the results showed that the combined method achieved a higher removal efficiency for COD, color, and NH3-N.

Anaerobic stabilized landfill leachate was treated by persulfate (S 2 O 8 2− ) oxidation. The effect of three factors namely; persulfate dosage, pH and reaction time on COD and NH 3 -N removals; was studied. The results of analysis of variance (ANOVA) showed that the selected factors significantly affected the percentage of COD and NH 3 -N removals. Furthermore, the maximum removal was achieved at 60 min of persulfate oxidation, a COD/S 2 O 8 2− ratio (1 g/4.2 g), and pH7, the percentage of removals for COD and NH 3 -N were 45% and 55%, respectively. The effect of persulfate oxidation on the biodegradability of leachate was also investigated. The results showed that the BOD 5 /COD ratio improved from 0.09 to 0.1. The oxidation enhanced the biodegradable (COD bi ) from 36% to 57%. Hence, persulfate is suitable to pre-treat highly-concentrated stabilized leachate. This process should follow the organic degradation and ammonia removal followed by biological treatment processes. ABSTRAK Larut lesap stabil anaerob telah dirawat secara pengoksidaan persulfat ((S 2 O 8 2−). Kesan tiga faktor iaitu dos persulfat, pH dan masa tindak balas terhadap penyingkiran COD dan NH 3 -N telah dikaji. Ujian ANOVA menunjukkan faktor tersebut memberi kesan yang bererti terhadap peratusan penyingkiran COD dan NH 3 -N. Seterusnya penyingkiran maksimum COD dan NH 3 -N masing-masing sebanyak 45% dan 55% telah dicapai pada masa 60 minit, nisbah COD/S 2 O 8 2− pada 1 g/4.2 g dan pada pH7. Kesan pengoksidaan persulfat terhadap keterbiodegredan larut lesapan juga dikaji. Hasil kajian menunjukkan nisbah BOD 5 /COD meningkat daripada 0.9 kepada 1.0. Pengoksidaan telah meningkatkan biodegredasi (COD bi ) dari 36% kepada 57%. Dengan ini, persulfat sesuai merawat larut lesap stabil yang berkepekatan tinggi. Proses ini seharusnya diikuti dengan degredasi bahan organik dan penyingkiran ammonia melalui proses rawatan secara biologi.
