Effect of physical feed restriction during rearing on Large White turkey breeder hens: 3. Body and carcass composition

Abstract: Large White turkey breeder hens were used to evaluate the effect of three different levels of physical feed restriction on subsequent body and carcass composition. The four feed treatments were 1) ad libitum fed throughout the study (CC), 2) feed restricted from 16 to 24 wk (CR), 3) feed restricted from 3 to 16 wk (RC), and 4) feed restricted from 3 to 24 wk (RR). Feed restriction was implemented so that RC and RR hens achieved a 45% reduction in BW compared to CC hens at 16 wk. From 16 to 24 wk, feed was allo… Show more

“…However, mean breast weight was numerically greater in birds fed on a single diet (group 3) than those of groups 1 and 2. This confirms that changes in breast development can produce transformation in the growth of other muscles as reported by Crouch et al (2002).…”

“…The opposite was found by ZUBAIR & LEESON (1994), who indicated improvement from feed conversion in controlled feeding programs due to a decrease in the basal metabolism, in birds receiving the restricted feed. Several factors could influence bird response to feed restriction, such as the animal physiological moment and its nutritional requirements, environmental conditions, and it could be possible that males and females respond differently to the restrictions (CROUCH et al, 2002b), which might justify different results.…”

“…In literature, it is possible to find studies that demonstrate the effects of feed restriction on turkey breeders (CROUCH et al, 2002a;CROUCH et al, 2002b) or commercial turkeys in the first stages of rearing (TUMOVÁ et al, 2002). However, in the finishing stage, studies are still scarce.…”

“…The alterations of body composition in the present study were due to food restriction and they are in accordance with the expected. Food restriction‐induced fat loss as a consequence of higher mobilization of fat stores (Crouch et al. 2002, Cox et al.…”

“…The alterations of body composition in the present study were due to food restriction and they are in accordance with the expected. Food restrictioninduced fat loss as a consequence of higher mobilization of fat stores (Crouch et al 2002, Cox et al 2003, Soriguer et al 2003 and increased water content (Comizio et al 1998) has been described. It is well known that severe malnutrition can lead to a reduction in protein content (MacDonald & Webber 1995).…”
