Effect of piston ring geometries on lubrication and friction in diesel engine

Abstract: Lubrication and friction in piston rings are of a greater importance which has been receiving significant attention from tribologists for a long time. The main subsystems which contribute to friction include the ring-pack/liner, piston-skirt/liner, piston-pin/connecting-rod and connecting rod-crankshaft bearings. Piston rings are used in engines mainly to reduce leakage of gas in the combustion chamber and simultaneously provide a lubrication film in order to reduce friction during its motion. Wear between pis… Show more

“…It should be emphasized the high level of requirements for piston rings, the wear resistance of which determines the life of the cylinder-piston group of the internal combustion engine as a whole. According to expert estimates [1][2][3][4], up to 50% of the entire friction work of the internal combustion engine is expended on the friction work of the piston rings. Improving the operational properties of the working surface of the piston rings is achieved both by improving the materials used and the technological processes of machining, and by applying modern wear-resistant coatings [4][5][6][7][8].…”
