Effect of Pitch Size on Technical-Tactical Actions of the Goalkeeper in Small-Sided Games

Abstract: The aim of this paper was to determine how the size of the pitch affected technical and tactical actions of the goalkeeper when playing small-sided games. The participants were 13 male youth players, including 3 goalkeepers. Three different pitch sizes were used (62 x 44 m; 50 x 35 m; 32 x 23 m). On each pitch, the players played three matches of 8 minutes, with 5-minute breaks between matches. Numerous variables were recorded and examined: defensive and offensive technical and tactical actions, opponent’s sho… Show more

“…Information provided by the current research can enable a more thorough understanding of goalkeeper performance characteristics. Our consideration is in full compliance with Sainz de Baranda et al (2005a) and Jara et al (2018) who claim that the player should be trained to meet the requirements on the game. Currently, the goalkeeper progressively has a larger role in the collective game, so for a complete learning process, planning of goalkeeper practice should consider both attacking and defensive actions.…”

“…However, the literature shows that the increase in density, represented by the smaller space per player, results in a worse technical index in invasion sports games 11 , making it necessary to investigate this behavior in volleyball. In this context, our findings suggest that performing SSGs in sizes that approximate the actual area game (square footage per player) is important to maintain characteristics that emerge from the competition environment 23 , a fact observed in the indexes of technical and tactical analysis of passing.…”

“…These results corroborate the literature, showing that actions are interconnected in volleyball, that is, passing interferes in setting 17,18 , suggesting that the worst technical and tactical scores found in the 3.0m x 3.0m situation influenced the setting. On the other hand, situational constraints imposed by different court dimensions and technical-tactical demands specific to the game scenario affect player behavior 11,23 .…”

“…Even though much research on SSGs has been performed during the last years, the vast majority of the studies conducted have focused on field players [18]. To the best of our knowledge, only one study has been carried out comparing the effect of the pitch size on the goalkeeper as a main subject [36]. In this study, Jara et al [36] aimed to determine how the size of the pitch affected technical and tactical actions of the goalkeeper when playing in three different SSGs.…”

In this study, Jara et al [36] aimed to determine how the size of the pitch affected technical and tactical actions of the goalkeeper when playing in three different SSGs. Three different scenarios of SSG were designed and two teams of five-a-side players plus goalkeeper played three matches of 8 min per scenario.…”
