Effect of ply orientation and laminate thickness on carbon fibre reinforced polymers under low‐velocity impact

Abstract: Composite materials, which have gained prominence in the aerospace industry due to their high strength-to-weight ratio, are vulnerable to delamination damage when struck by low-speed projectiles due to their low through-thickness strength. This paper presents the experimental evaluation of a composite plate subjected to low-velocity impact. The plates under discussion were constructed using a carbon fibre reinforced polymer laminate with a quasi-isotropic ply structure. Experiments were carried out using a con… Show more

“…Adhesive-connected sections are widely utilized in many technical domains, and scholars have examined their structural behavior in a variety of contexts. [11][12][13][14] Akpinar et al 15 have examined the impact of the component thicknesses on the adhesively connected joint's failing performance during reversal fatigue load circumstances. Metallic patches increase adhesives connected to fracturing loads by 94%, according to research by Demir et al.…”

“…Adhesively linked structures using additively made adhesives give producers and consumers an amazing opportunity to employ common, reasonably priced 3D printers with FDM technology to create more extensive, practically intricate designs. Adhesive‐connected sections are widely utilized in many technical domains, and scholars have examined their structural behavior in a variety of contexts 11–14 . Akpinar et al 15 have examined the impact of the component thicknesses on the adhesively connected joint's failing performance during reversal fatigue load circumstances.…”

“…It also reduced the overall weight, stress concentration, and cost of assembly of the composite construction. Epoxy adhesive is used in adhesive bonding and offers a number of benefits, including the ability to combine various components, homogeneous stress transmission, a better coating, and a lighter combination [32,33]. However, they have some drawbacks as well, such as a longer curing time, lower humidity, and less tolerance to temperature changes.…”
