Effect of Pore Characteristics in Slip Cast Alumina on Glass Infiltration and Mechanical Properties of the Composites

Abstract: Development of alumina/glass composites with minimal residual porosity and superior mechanical properties requires systematic studies on glass infiltration into porous alumina. This work has examined the effect of alumina particle size and the resulting pore size distribution on glass infiltration. Samples were prepared by slip‐casting a coarser alumina powder and blends of the coarse (d50 ~ 3.4 μm) and a finer (d50 ~ 0.7 μm) alumina powder. After presintering (1200°C) and following a single cycle of infiltrat… Show more

“…Porous alumina preforms were prepared by slip casting followed by sintering at 1200°C for 2 h. The detailed process to prepare the alumina samples and glass composition used for infiltration has been mentioned elsewhere . Earlier experiments carried out on infiltration of porous alumina preforms (CT850, prepared by alumina powder blend having 50:50 wt% of finer ( D 50 ~ 0.7 μm) and coarser alumina ( D 50 ~ 3 μm) powder), with a heating rate of 5°C/min showed poor infiltration and residual glass on the top after infiltration.…”

“…For the fabrication of glass-infi ltrated ceramics of spinel (MgAl 2 O 4 ), alumina and ceria-stabilised ZrO 2 /Al 2 O 3 nanocomposite, a process involving slip-casting, sintering and infi lling is used (Bajpai and Bhargava, 2012;Della Bona et al ., 2008). Slip-casting is fi rst used to produce a highly porous three-dimensional structure from the aforementioned crystalline materials, which are then sintered at the temperatures appropriate for the chosen crystalline phase to produce a highly stable crystalline network.…”
