Effect of potato on kibble characteristics and diet digestibility and palatability to adult dogs and puppies

Abstract: The objective was to evaluate kibble characteristics, coefficients of total tract apparent digestibility (CTTAD) of nutrients, metabolisable energy (ME), palatability, and faecal characteristics of diets containing potato starch (PS) fed to adult dogs and puppies. Four diets containing 0, 100, 200, or 300 g/kg PS, at the expense of corn, were evaluated in three experiments. Experiment 1 evaluated the physical characteristics of the diets. Experiment 2 evaluated diet digestibility and faecal characteristics in … Show more

“…In a second trial, when a group of dogs switched from a diet containing 0.6% DM to 14.7% DM of CF, the digestibility of DM was reduced from 90% to 70% ( Burrows et al , 1982 ). Likewise, replacing corn with up to 300 g/kg DM potato starch in a kibble diet lowered the amount of CF by 21%, increased the digestibility of DM by 2.4%, calories by 2.0%, and the ME by 0.24 kcal/g ( Domingues et al , 2019 ). When two diets of similar fiber content were fed to a group of adult dogs, the diet that was higher in fat and protein contents led to an increase in digestibility of fat, protein, and calorie ( Kienzle et al , 2001 ).…”

“…A umidade apresentou conformidade ao MAPA (2009). A maioria dos ingredientes utilizados para formulação de ração para cães apresentam baixa umidade e o próprio processo de extrusão que é realizado em alta temperatura para obtenção dos croquetes da ração, proporciona a expansão do amido e evaporação de líquidos, fazendo que os apresentes apresentem baixo teor de umidade se enquadrado no valor máximo exigido (Domingues et al, 2019).…”

“…Though Costa Rica is a producer of potato, very rarely are any rations or compound feed formulated using potato starch. It has been used both in Mexico and Brazil as a feed ingredient for fish feed ( Frías-Quintana et al., 2017 ) and pet food ( Domingues et al, 2019 ). Finally, locally Musaceae can be used as a feed ingredient, as well as produce of human consumption (see discussion below).…”
