The voltage regulator switching noise is an unavoidable problem in the server system. It degrades the signal integrity of the signal trace nearby the VR area. Two effective ways to reduce VR noise are shortening the distance and making back-drill. This paper verified these two ways by simulating three cases: power plane coupling, VR vias coupling to signal line, and VR vias coupling to signal vias. Finally, it shows that shortening distance and making back-drill significantly reduce crosstalk in the frequency and time domains.
